Lares Project: Scaling-Up

Putting Lessons into Practice: Scaling-Up Peoples` Biodiversity Management for Food Security

This project works with indigenous peoples and farming communities in Zimbabwe, Peru, and Vietnam. The target groups are selected on the basis of acute seed insecurity and the role of women in food security. In the case of Peru, the project takes place in Lares, Cuzco. Currently there are five indigenous communities with communal land that covers a wide range of ecological floors.

Using a systems perspective, this proposal works on the relations of food systems at local to global levels and the active participation of poor rural people for inclusive policy governance. The focus is on the knowledge and experiences of indigenous peoples and smallholder farming communities as key stakeholders to identify the challenges posed by climate change and build appropriate responses. In the case of Lares, we are scaling-up biodiversity management taking lessons learned in the Potato Park and adapting them to the reality of Lares. In Lares there is a wider range of local crops due to the diverse ecological floors which allows us to gather data about climate change and the adaptability of various native crops, such as, corn, faba beans, coffee, avocado and oranges, as well as the potato varieties.

The strategic vision is set on helping indigenous people and smallholders, particularly women, to empower themselves to claim their right to food. The project’s strategy is geared towards sustainability by scaling up people’s capacity to organize, learn and act to innovate continuously and engage in corresponding policy changes. In Lares we work with local technicians and a Farmers' Field School which allows for horizontal, participative learning.
